Root Canal Treatment at Rivergum Smiles

smiling person looking downRoot canal therapy is a type of dental procedure that treats teeth with infected or traumatised nerves. When past injuries or deep areas of decay cause the nerve tissue to swell or die, it can result in permanent tooth loss or severe pain. Fortunately, a root canal can prevent that from happening and preserve your tooth several more years.

Do I Need a Root Canal?

Root canals are recommended when infection, cracks or cavities have reached deep enough into a tooth to come into contact with the nerve. Common symptoms and conditions include

  • Darkening of the tooth’s natural colour
  • Evidence of root resorption on dental X-rays
  • Cracked teeth
  • Dental abscesses
  • A history of traumatic injury
  • Severe pain or hypersensitivity
During your exam, we’ll take an X-ray of the tooth to evaluate the inner nerve chamber and area surrounding the root. If an abscess or other condition is evident, a root canal will be recommended.

Planning for Your Root Canal Treatment

For your convenience, we’re able to provide most root canal treatments in our family practice rather than refer you to an off-site specialist. This option makes your comprehensive dental care more efficient and affordable.

As with any other type of restorative procedure, your tooth will be numbed in order to prevent any discomfort during the treatment. Having a root canal is no more uncomfortable than getting a filling, except that it can take a little while longer. To ease the process, we offer gentle nitrous oxide sedation upon request.

After getting a root canal, you’ll likely need to have a crown placed over the tooth. Because there is no longer a vital nerve supply, the enamel will become more brittle and prone to chipping or wear. A crown will allow you to continue using your tooth normally, protecting your smile for the long term.
